+34 933 223 215Hotel Derby in Barcelona is much more than a four-star accommodation next to Avinguda Diagonal: it is also a place where 20th-century art is an essential part of the guest experience. Integrated into the philosophy of Derby Hotels Collection, the hotel displays a carefully curated selection of works that turn its spaces into a living gallery open to the city.
Its collection combines Catalan and international art, with standout pieces such as triptychs by Josep Guinovart, works by Joan Miró in the restaurant and pop art references by Andy Warhol in the cocktail bar, as well as works by artists such as Wilfredo Lam, Ràfols Casamada and Javier Mariscal in different areas and rooms. This constant presence of art is not decorative, but part of a cultural project that seeks to bring together creativity and hospitality, reinforcing the hotel’s commitment to culture and its wish to open its spaces to visitors and art lovers, turning every stay into an inspiring and accessible experience.
At Hotel Derby, five 18th-century limestone sculptures also stand out, portraying the enigmatic Mnemosyne, mother of the muses in Greek mythology, and four of her daughters from her union with Zeus: Urania, Melpomene, Clio, and Polyhymnia. These pieces serve as the starting point of the building’s artistic journey, lending it a solemn presence rich in symbolism.
Alongside them, the hotel also features classically inspired elements, such as Greco-Roman mosaics, which strengthen this dialogue with the Mediterranean classical tradition. These pieces coexist with the furnishings and architecture of the building, creating an atmosphere where history becomes part of the hotel’s everyday life.
Clio was one of the nine Muses of Greek mythology, the daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne. She was the muse of history, tasked with inspiring memory and the recording of past events. She was depicted with a trumpet or a scroll, symbols of historical narration.
Joan Miró had a deep connection with Barcelona, his hometown. He trained there and developed his early artistic sensibility. Although he lived in partial exile, he always maintained an emotional bond with the city. Barcelona is home to major works by him, such as the Fundació Joan Miró and the airport mural.
Artworks and antiques from the collection can be found throughout every area of the hotel, including inside the rooms.
